- Endemics: Parrot, Tody, Woodpecker, Tanager, Spindalis, Emerald,
Green Mango, Bullfinch, Lizard Cuckoo, Oriole, Flycatcher, Screech Owl,
Adelaide´s Warbler, Elfin Woods Warbler, Yellow-shouldered Blackbird,
Vireo. Possible endemics: Pewee, Loggerhead Kingbird, Antillean
Euphonia. Plus many Antillean Caribbean Specialties, shorebirds, ducks,
gulls, and terns.
- Birding Sites: El Yunque National Forest, Fajardo, Río Grande, Luquillo,
Maricao, Laguna Cartagena, Lajas, Guánica, Cabo Rojo, Mayagüez,
Quebradillas, Camuy, Arecibo, and many localities along the way.
Day 1 - Arrival (you must arrive Sunday before 2 PM)
We will drive to the eastern tip of the island looking for the five
hummingbirds (PR Emerald, PR Green Mango, Green Throated Carib,
Antillean Mango, Antillean Crested Hummingbird) that nest in Puerto Rico,
plus three other endemic species: Adelaide´s Warbler, Vireo and
Flycatcher. After dinner, we will go to El Yunque National Forest looking
for the our Screech Owl and endemic glow in the dark fungi. Other
possible birds: Troupial, Gray Kingbird, Caribbean Elaenia, Mangrove
Cuckoo, Brown Booby, Greater Antillean Grackle, Banaquit, Antillean
Nighthawk. Overnight @ Luquillo, Hotel Yunque Mar.
Day 2 - Full-day birding trip @ El Yunque National Forest
Today we will be looking for more endemics, such as the Flycatcher,
Tody, Oriole, Woodpecker, Tanager, Spindalis, Bullfinch, Lizard
Cuckoo, Emerald, Green Mango, Elfin-woods Warbler, and possible
endemics, Loggerhead Kingbird, Antillean Euphonia. Plus, Red-legged
Thrush, Pearly-eyed Thrasher, Ruddy Quail-Dove, Black-faced Grassquit,
Pin-tail Wydah, Smooth-billed Ani. Overnight @ Luquillo.
Day 3 - Full-day birding trip @ West / Southwest
From east to west, from the mountains to the coast, today we will first
drive west to the mountainous small town of Maricao in search of the
Elfin-wood Warbler and the Lesser Antillean Pewee (a possible
endemic). We continue our journey to the southwestern coast looking for
the Yellow-shouldered Blackbird and ducks (West Indian Whistling
Duck, Caribbean Coot, Masked Duck). At the end of the day, we drive to
Guánica for the PR Nightjar and Antillean Nighthawk. Other possible
birds along the day: Broad-winged Hawk, Plain Pigeon, Yellow-faced
Grassquit, Indian Silverbill, Bronze Mannikin, Nutmeg Mannikin, Orange
Bishop, Grasshopper Sparrow, Orange-cheeked Waxbill, Glossy Ibis,
Least Bittern. Overnight @ La Parguera, Parador Villa Parguera.
Day 4 - Full-day birding trip @ West / Southwest / North Belt
Just in case we have missed them, we will visit the Salt Flats looking for
the Yellow-shouldered Blackbird and Caribbean Elaenia, plus another
chance for the Troupial. While driving along the coast, we will stop in
different stops looking for more birds, including the White-tailed Tropicbird
(June), Greater Flamingo. Overnight @ Hatillo, Hotel Punta Maracayo.
Day 5 - Early morning drive for our last endemic: the PR Parrot, then
return to San Juan Airport in the afternoon.

2008 Honda Pilot.
