Puerto Rico has two major karst regions, northern and
southern. The northern karst (North Belt) is located in a
subtropical moist forest life zone. Due to its topography
the karst region consist of an unique unfragmented forest
holding the most extensive forest canopy cover on the
Island.
The North Belt Region, at the heartland of our countryside,
is one place where you can find endemic species. During
our half-day bird outing (North Belt Corridor) we spend
the morning in Arecibo, while the full day (The North Belt
Birding Loop) route (Arecibo, Rincón, Quebradillas,
Aguadilla) will depend on the target birds you want to see.
Possible endemic species: Tody, Bullfinch, Green
Mango, Emerald, Mango, Lizard Cuckoo, Adelaide´s
Warbler, plus Antillean and Caribbean specialties. The
loop also explores the coastal northrn plains and lagoons,
expect to see the West Indian Whistling Duck, the Greater
Flamingo, and seasonal Tropic Birds.

| Our Iguaca is critically endangered and breeds from January through June. Since most birders visit Puerto Rico from September through May, we encourage everyone to avoid any type of distress to this species as local and federal Laws protect them. |
